Acute Health Effects: From MSDS:EMERGENCY OVERVIEW May cause skin irritation. Eye irritant. May cause burns and corneal abrasions. May cause upper respiratory irritation. Ingestion may cause burns to the mouth, pharynx, esophagus and stomach. POTEN11AL HEALTH EFFECTS EYE: May cause severe eye irritation with possible burns and corneal abrasions. Skin CONTACT: May cause various severities of irritation upon prolonged, repeated, or occluded contact.INGESTION: May cause pain and burns to mucous membranes, the esophagus and stomach. with vomiting and diarrhea. INHALATION : Exposure to high dust concentrations may cause physical discomfort of the upper respiratory tract with coughing, dryness, and sore throat.
Chronic Health Effects: From MSDS:Quartz (Crystalline Silica): Acute inhalation of extremely high concentrations or chronic inhalation of finely divided silica dust above occupational standards may cause silicosis. A number of studies have shown that persons diagnosed as having silicosis have an increased risk of dying from lung cancer. Smoking aggravates the effects of exposure. Diatomaceous Earth: Pulmonary effects of long-term exposure vary with extent of exposure and, more importantly. the composition of the dust. A study of quarry workers exposed for more than 5 years to only diatomaceous earth revealed no significant pulmonary X-ray changes. X-ray without disability may also occur. Silicosis, in one case characterized as mild, was reported to be found in two groups of crude diatomite workers. Uncalcined diatomaceous earth is considered to be low in toxicity, but still is likely to contain some amount of crystalline silica. the presence of which may greatly increase the potential for a more disabling silicosis to occur.
Carcinogenicity: Quartz is an NTP Anticipated Human Carcinogen, and an IARC Group 2A Carcinogen (human limited evidence, animal sufficient evidence).
First Aid: SKIN : Rinse affected area with mild soap and large amounts of water until no evidence of product remains. Get medical attention if irritation persists. EYES: Immediately rinse eyes with plenty of clean, flowing water, occasionally lifting upper and lower eyelids. Flush for at least 15 minutes. Get medical attention if pain or irritation persist. INHALATION: Immediately move affected person from area of exposure to fresh air. Treat symptomatically and supportively. Get medical attention or contact a local poison control center. If breathing has stopped, give artificial respiration and get immediate medical attention.INGESTION: Maintain airway and respiration. If vomiting occurs, keep head below hips to prevent aspiration. Dilution by rinsing the mouth and giving water or milk to drink is generally recommended. Do not attempt to give anything orally to an unconscious person. Treat symptomatically and supportively. Get medical attention or contact local poison control.
